The brand was founded in 1973 under the leadership of founder Yvon Chouinard, an avid mountaineer and lover of the great outdoors. Organic cotton, recycled and recyclable materials

The eco-friendly facet of Patagonia has been part of the brand's DNA for many years. By starting to use partially recycled paper for their catalogues in the mid-1980s and then developing recycled polyester from soda bottles for their fleeces, the brand consolidates its eco-friendly commitment year after year. In autumn 1994, Patagonia decided to use only organic cotton for their sportswear range from 1996 onwards. Then in January 2012, Patagonia became the first Californian company to become a "benefit corporation", a legal status that allows companies with a vision like Patagonia to remain the same as they develop.

Patagonia's commitment to the environment continues with the creation of Worn Wear, the clothing repair service, and Tin Shed Ventures, the venture capital fund to help start-ups that value giving back to society and the environment as much as financial gains. This was followed up in 2014 with a partnership with Fair Trade USA, and then in 2018 with the creation of Patagonia Action Works, which connects customers with the environmental action groups that Patagonia supports. On September 14, 2022, the Earth became Patagonia’s sole shareholder. Ownership of Patagonia has been transferred to two new entities: Patagonia Purpose Trust and the non-profit Holdfast Collective. Every dollar that is not reinvested in Patagonia will be put towards protecting the planet.
