Burton Photon Step On Boots

The flex of a boot partly determines how it feels on snow. A soft construction favours freedom of movement and forgiveness, while a stiffer boot provides more support and precision. An intermediate flex offers a versatile solution for varying terrain and riding styles.

How flex affects your ride

A soft boot moves more easily with your ankle and feels more forgiving. It's suitable for beginners or snowboarders seeking freedom and comfort. A stiffer boot offers more support and transmits movements more directly, giving greater responsiveness in turns and edge changes.

Your choice depends on your level and intended use. An intermediate flex is a good compromise between comfort and support, while a firmer flex is preferred for more precision and responsiveness.

Waverange, Waverange Plus, Waverange X: the premium range

The Waverange, Waverange Plus, and Waverange X families offer different configurations to match support level and built-in technologies. Waverange focuses on a soft, smooth feel, while Waverange Plus adds Dual Zone BOA® adjustment. Waverange X features a more technical build and, on some versions, a Vibram® outsole and Step On® system.

When trying on, your toes may lightly touch the front when standing straight, but should be free when you bend your knees in a snowboard stance. Boots that are too big reduce heel hold, while boots that are too small can cause pressure points and discomfort.

Wide feet: Wide versions

Wide versions offer more width and volume for snowboarders with wider feet. They help reduce pressure points while keeping the right boot length. Some Burton models, like the Waverange Plus Step On, are available in both Regular and Wide versions.

How long does it take to break in new boots?

Break-in time depends on the model, its flex, and how often you use them. The liner gradually shapes to your foot over several sessions, and the boot can become more comfortable after a few outings. Some Burton models also have heat-mouldable liners for a better fit.

However, it's best to choose a properly fitting boot from the start. Boots that are too big won't become more suitable just because the liner softens over time.

What's the difference between a standard and a Wide boot?
